Our Mission

1. Create employment by supporting local economies

For many of our artisans, their craft work is the primary source of income, particularly since the effects of Covid-19 limited all other means of work. By teaming up with locals from marginalised communities The Rafiki Collection helps stimulate their economies through local employment which allows them to sustain their livelihoods and thrive. We strongly believe it is important to connect rural communities to a new market and by offering affordable pricing we hope to increase sales, demand and value of their work.

3. Practice sustainable methods

The word ‘sustainability’ is being used so often by brands, What does it really mean?

Being a sustainable brand means not solely focusing on producing the product and its potential returns but instead putting ethical needs of workers and the environmental impact first. All of our products are sourced locally, naturally and from recycled products where possible. We are very conscious of the materials being used and we strive to have a minimal impact on natural resources. Our leather is a by-product from the meat industry and our glass beads are recycled. Our bangles and brass jewellery use up-cycled materials such as old cooking pots and padlocks!

5. To be completely honest with all involved in The Rafiki Collection chain

Honesty IS the best policy. From the beginning to the end we promise to be completely honest about how our products are made, where the materials come from and who the makers are. Our customers trust in us is important and therefore if you have any questions, please get in touch.

2. Celebrate our artisans

It is too often we see people take credit for products which aren’t theirs or even mention the hard efforts that individuals have endeavoured. The Rafiki Collection promises to celebrate our wonderful team and tell their story. Through communication and the power of social media we want to empower our artisans as they are the centre of our work. The process would not be possible without them.

4. Invest in traditional and innovative hand crafted techniques

Kenya is a country full of fascinating people who are extremely proud of their ancestral identity. With globalisation being more precedent than before it is crucial to conserve these cultural crafting techniques to ensure they are not forgotten or lost. Through investing in their products The Rafiki Collection is hoping to conserve generational techniques whilst spreading their word and value to a new market.

Even for the new innovative crafting techniques it is important to highlight and share the story of the talented people who are determined to make a difference and start something new!
